According to mythology, Chalki is supposed to have taken its name from copper (Chalkos in Greek) mines of antiquity. Many conquerors came to the island, from the Dorians to Venetians, Turks and Italians until its union with Greece on 1948 along with the other Dodecanese Islands.
Tiny and perfectly traditional Chalki confirms again and again the magic and the unique character of Greek Islands. One only settlement lies like an amphitheatre over the port where the fishermen lay their fish in the morning and their nets in the evening. prepping them for the following day. Two storey renovated mansion houses with traditional roofs and windows with a unique “eye” in the middle painted ochre and blue create an unique atmosphare and echo of the glorious past of the island.
The bell tower of Agios Nikolaos, which is built on ana arc made of ancient marble.
The Clock Tower, in impressive landmark, with twin staircases and rich decorative elements, a gift from the expat communities of islanders.
The fort of the Knights of St. John next to an old city Ruins.
The Renovated windmills which also offer a breath-taking view to the Aegean Sea.
Chalki might not have a very long coast but the relentless sea and the centuries have created many beautiful coves and bays with rocks, white sand and turqoise water.
Ftenagia is a beautiful bay that you can reach by foot or by boat and it has a restaurant with traditional food nearby.
Pontamos is a larger beach with sunbeds and shade. The beach is sandy and shallow ideal for families with children.
Kania is petite bay with outstanding clear and bluegreen waters and its accessible by taxi, bus or boat.
